William Shakespeare was a 16th century English poet and playwright who is considered to be the world's most respected authors\writers in the English language. He is often called England's National Poet and the "bard of avon" because of his highly praised plays and writing that has received worldwide acclaim and praise due to his literary writing styles. In particular, he is known for creating popular dramatic works like Hamlet, Romeo & Juliet, Macbeth, and numerous others. Most of Shakespeare's works include a collection of 38 plays, 154 sonnets, two long narrative poems, and several other poems.
Although William Shakespeare was a figure of much controversy during his lifetime, he will always be remembered as a literary genius whose writings have impacted the entire world and influenced culture, art, theatre, film, and even literature in a major way. His plays have been translated into every major living language and are performed more than any other popular play created. His earlier works were mostly comedies and histories, like Midsummer Night's Dream and Much Ado About Nothing. After achieving literary success in this area, William Shakespeare began to write mainly tragedies, like Hamlet, Macbeth, and King Lear, which are known to be his finest literary works in the English language. Shakespeare produced most of his known work between 1589 and 1613.
William Shakespeare died without publishing any of the plays that he wrote. Several years after his death, when many corrupted versions of the plays were being printed, two friends, John Heminge and Henry Condell, decided to collect, edit, and publish all thirty-six of Shakespeare’s plays that they believed to be authentic. For this important work they chose the "folio" format, which refers to a book size where the sheet of paper on which the text is printed is folded once to form two leaves or four pages. Because it is the first compilation of Shakespeare's plays and is printed in the folio format, this book is often referred to as the "First Folio." A number of Shakespeare’s important plays appear in print for the first time in this volume and, without it, would likely have been lost. Of the approximately 1,200 copies printed, only about 250 remain today.
Over the centuries there has been much speculation surrounding various aspects of Shakespeare's life including his religious affiliation, sexual orientation, sources for collaborations, authorship of and chronology of the plays and sonnets. Many of the dates of play performances, when they were written, adapted or revised and printed are imprecise. This biography attempts only to give an overview of his life, while leaving the more learned perspectives to the countless scholars and historians who have devoted their lives to the study and demystification of the man and his works.
